Tayi, Albert Named Athletes of the Week
After a spring season interrupted by near constant rain, Berkshire County's track and field athletes acquitted themselves well under sunny skies at Saturday's Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships.
The county's contingent brought back three event titles, a second-place team finish and a host of qualifiers for next Saturday's All-State Meet back in Westfield.
This week's iBerkshires.com/Adams Community Bank Athletes of the Week were right in the mix.
Taconic junior Josh Tayi competed in just one event at Westfield State University, but he made the most of it.
Tayi won the high jump by clearing 6 feet.
The 10 points he earned for Taconic helped his team finish in the top 20 with 18 points, good for a 16th-place finish.
Mount Greylock's girls had the best team finish, with 73 points that were good for second place out of 44 teams earning at least a point on Saturday.
Maddie Albert and her fellow Greylock seniors finished their final sectional competition in style.
Caroline Hadley earned a second-place finish in the discus.
Albert placed second in the 800 meters and third in the 400 hurdles.
In the hurdles, she knocked more than a second and a half off her seed time to cross the line in 1 minute, 7.12 seconds.
In the 800, she shaved two full seconds off her seed time, finishing in 2:20.23, less than a second behind winner Tessa McClain of Bromfield.
Albert contributed 14 points to the Mounties' 73-point total.
