Greylock Grabs Good Road Win over Wahconah
DALTON, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock boys' soccer team capped off a solid week by winning its second road game in a row on Thursday, scoring three times in the second half to earn a 4-0 win over Wahconah.Greylock has had an unbalanced schedule to say the least this year, playing its first five games of the season at home before going on the road for nine out of its next 10 matches. The Mounties (7-0-2) earned ties in their first two road games but came back strong this week by earning 4-0 victories over both St. Joe's and the Warriors (3-4-2)
After a fairly evenly-matched first half, Blair Dils' squad took control of the contest by scoring three times after halftime. An own goal by Wahconah three minutes into the second half took some pressure off of Greylock's offense, but the Mounties continued to attack the Warriors' net, earning a 12-1 advantage in shots in the second half alone.
"The boys did well to grab a North win on the road, especially after a road game yesterday," Dils said. "Being able to cushion our lead early in the second half was critical, and I liked how we kept attacking all the way to the end of the match. "We're happy to get out of this week with two wins and be that much closer to cliniching a playoff berth. We have a very challenging game on Monday against a skilled and well-coached Monson team, but we're looking forward to the challenge."
Junior Nathan Majumder increased Greylock's lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute. He took a pass from eighth-grader Benni McComish, chested the ball down to his feet and finished for his fifth goal of the season. The Mounties then put the game away for good a minute later, using several one-touch passes that led to an easy putaway for senior Jesse Foehl.
Majumder and junior goalkeeper Sean Houston (three saves) played pivotal roles in keeping Wahconah at bay in the first half. Houston came up with a critical save early in the game, while Majumder used a really nice pass to set up freshman Ian Brink for the first goal of the game in the 28th minute
"Sean made a one-handed, highlight-reel save in the first half to keep us tied at zero," Dils said. "Had Wahconah gotten the lead, the whole tenor of the match would have changed. The first goal was a very unselfish play on Nathan's part. He dribbled in on the right, could have shot, but he played a low pass into the center of the box for Ian to finish off."
Greylock next plays at Monson at 2 p.m. on Monday.
