WILLIAMSTOWN — Wahconah boys soccer goalkeeper Braden Chevillet wears the nickname "Chevy" on his back.
On Monday afternoon at Mount Greylock, he was more like a Cadillac.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Eric Hirsch played like a Porsche.

Hirsch made a brilliant run through the Wahconah defense and set up a wide open Benni McCommish for the only goal of a 1-0 Mount Greylock victory on John T. Allen Field.

Chevillet stopped 12 shots, including eight saves in the second half. But Hirsch and McCommish hooked up midway through the first half to spoil Wahconah's shutout bid.

"Eric was dodging in the middle and poked it out," McCommish said. "We've been working on layoffs in practice, and he kind of laid it off to me. I took a shot and it went in.

"We've been working on that kind of combination in practice, and I guess we pulled it off."

Hirsch was in the middle of a number of other dangerous scoring chances for the Mounties (9-3-4), who are unbeaten in their last five games going into Thursday's Senior Night contest against Taconic.

Monday's win against Wahconah (7-4-3) would have been a lot more comfortable were it not for the work of Chevillet.

"He played great," Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils said. "I had heard he'd been struggling a little bit last week. But he really made some nice saves today.

"We were persistent. We were getting balls on frame. And he did a nice job. ... The one goal he gave up, he probably wants that one back."

At the other end, Cal Filson notched his third shutout in his last four outings by making all three saves he needed to.

Perhaps Wahconah's best scoring chance of the game came in the 50th minute off a free kick from about 47 yards by Jeff Pullano. Kevin Boino headed the ball toward the net from the middle of the box, but Filson was there to keep his team on top.

Moments later, Wahconah generated another dangerous chance with a run by Pat Jamross and Curran Doyle up the left wing, but Mounties defender Jake Foehl was there to break up the play.

Most of the play action was in Mount Greylock's offensive third, especially in the second half.

"In the second half, in particular, I thought we moved the ball with a little more ... I don't know, flair, I guess is the right word," Dils said. "It was nice to see us synch some passes together and find open spaces, get those triangles going, get different guys involved.

"We just need to be sharper in that 18 box, that's all."

The Mounties have 37 goals in 16 games, but they have just two in their last three outings: a 1-1 tie with Monument
Mountain, a 0-0 tie to Pittsfield and Monday's 1-0 win.

A couple of the near misses on Monday included Ian Brink's shot off a pass from Grant Raphael that sailed just high on first-half corner kick, Hirsch's at the end of a run up the right wing that ended in a Chevillet save and Crow Brennan's volley of a Sam Dils cross that Chevillet denied.

"These guys always play us tough," McCommish said. "It's always tough to score on these guys. It's good to get a win.
"Their goalie played very, very well. He made a couple of key saves and kept them in the game."
