It was a busy and productive early season week for iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care’s initial Athletes of the Week for the 2023-24 academic year.

Ian Godfrey and the Hoosac Valley boys soccer team, who saw their season opener delayed by weather, went 3-0 in their first week of competition.

Godfrey was right in the middle of things for a potent Hurricane offense in the early going.

He had a hat trick with two assists in the season opener against Putnam Voc, posted the same individual numbers in the home opener against Commerce and scored both goals in a 2-0 road win at Westfield Tech.

That makes a total of eight goals in just three games to start the season.

Godfrey and Hoosac Valley had yet another weather postponement on Monday but are slated to make it up Tuesday afternoon when they host rival Drury, the first of three straight games against Berkshire County opponents.

Weather has not been an issue for Julia DeChaine and the Mount Greylock volleyball team, who started their season earlier than most teams when they played a Labor Day match against county rival Wahconah.

The Mounties won that day and have not stopped winning, starting the season with a 7-0 record.

DeChaine leads Mount Greylock with 23 aces and has 37 kills to date.

Last week, she started her week with six kills in a five-set win over previously unbeaten Longmeadow, the only opponent to take a set from the Mounties so far.

One day later, she served five aces in a win over Pittsfield, and she closed the week with 13 kills in a three-setter against West Springfield.

“I think we’re a really close-knit team,” DeChaine said after the season opener on Sept. 4. “We’re mostly seniors, and we’ve played together for like six years. I think that really helps.”

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
