Westfield Rallies as McCann Loses Fifth Straight
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Losers of four straight games coming into Tuesday's match against Wesfield Vocational, the McCann Tech boys' soccer team needed to get off to a strong start against the Tigers.Junior Chad Raimer provided the spark the Hornets needed, scoring a pair of goals in the first 28 minutes of the game, but it was Westfield who scored the final three goals of the contest for a come-from-behind 3-2 win on the road.
McCann (2-7-1) experienced as much bad luck as one team could ask for, giving up a penalty-kick goal in the 66th minute of the game to fall behind. Senior captain Nate Gutmann then had a chance to tie the score but hit his second post of the game.
"We had monents of brillance in the first half and scored two nice goals," Hornets head coach Adam Kozik said. "Unfortunately, Westfield came out stronger in the second half and outplayed us. A foul in the box put us behind and a missed shot on an open goal sealed our fate for this game."
Raimer opened things up by launching a long shot over the keeper's head in the fifth minute of the game. He then made the score 2-0 by volleying in a cross from freshman Shane Fuller in the 28th minute. Mike Makarchuk cut the lead to 2-1 for the Tigers five and a half minutes before halftime, and it was his penalty kick with just under 15 minutes to go that clinched the win for Westfield.
Connor Vazquez made 17 saves in goal for McCann, which next plays at Smith Voc. at 4 p.m. on Friday.
