NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --  The McCann Tech boys' soccer team had its opportunities in its season-opening game against St. Mary's on Friday. It was the Saints, however, who made the most of their chances, earning a 2-1 win on a goal by Zach Slepchuck in the 64th minute of the game.

The Hornets' defense, led by centerback Dylan Walker and goalie Connor Vazquez, did a good job of keeping St. Mary's off the board in the first half of the game. Vazquez made seven of his 13 saves before halftime, but the Saints finally got to him just three minutes into the second half when Mark Dobek's cross from the right side skipped into the net. McCann midfielder Nate Gutmann tied the game with a penalty kick in the 55th minute, but Slepchuck took advantage of some open space on the right side of the field and lofted a shot over Vazquez's head for the game winner.

The Hornets were outshot 13-10 in the game, but they certainly had their chances with six corner kicks in the contest. McCann will try again for its first win of the season when it hosts Smith Voc. at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
