Greylock Sprints Past Drury from the Start
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- There's good starts and then there's the start the Mount Greylock boys' soccer team got off to against Drury on Thursday night. The Mounties completley caught the Blue Devils off guard, scoring six goals within the first 12 minutes of the game on their way to a 10-1 win at home. Senior forward Jesse Foehl scored two out of his game-high four goals in the first 12 minutes, while Keath Machado, Luke Costley, Tom Dils and Nathan Majumder also found the back of the net to give Greylock (9-0-2) a 6-0 lead right out of the gate. Dils played a big role in distributing the ball, collecting a game-high four assists on the night.
"This game was rough from the start," Drury head coach Greg Caproni said. "After giving up six goals in the first 12 minutes, most teams would have just given up. We battled back to be able to contain them for a good portion for the game and actually netted a goal, which doesn't happen often against Mount Greylock."
Although his team took a knockout punch early, Caproni rallied his squad by calling a timeout shortly after the Mounties' offensive onslaught. The Blue Devils (2-6-1) responded by outscoring the hosts 1-0 over the next 50 minutes of the game. Senior captain Jake Tietgens scored his seventh goal of the season off of a pass from junior Jacob Groves in the 31st minute of play, but Greylock shut out Drury in the second half to preserve the victory.
"Six goals in twelve minutes tells the story for this game," Greylock head coach Blair Dils said. "Drury was unable to match our intensity at the start of the match. After Greg called timeout, they played much better and with more poise, which is a testament to his coaching. To their credit, they started the second half looking like the team that has won several games and will compete for the second playoff spot in the South Division. Tonight we definitely caught them off guard, however."
The Blue Devils kept the Mounties off the scoreboard for the first 22 minutes of the second half until Majumder netted a pair of goals within a six-minute span to lock down the hat trick. Not to be outdone, Foehl added two more strikes in the 70th and 74th minutes to tie Majumder for the team lead in goals with nine this season.
"Our passing was crisp and our finishing was strong at the beginning of the match," Dils said. "We were very disappointed to give up a counter-attack goal and not get Sean [Houston] his shutout, but overall our team defense was sturdy and limited their breaks for much of the match."
Dils said Machado was a big help on the defensive end, while Houston didn't need to make a single save to pick up the victory in the Greylock net. Overall, the Mounties held a 25-1 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Joseph Liporace and freshman Cameron Lesure combined to make six saves in goal for Drury.
Greylock next plays at Cathedral at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while the Blue Devils host Mount Everett at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
