Wahconah Heading Back to State Title Game
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- For the second time in three years, the Wahconah Regional High School football team will play for a state championship at Gillette Stadium.
Will Genaway ran for a 74-yard touchdown to give Wahconah a five-point lead, and it held on for a 16-8 win over West Boylston at Westfield State University in Saturday’s state Division 4 semi-final.
Wahconah (10-1) moves on to the Dec. 3 title game against South Sectional champion Mashpee (10-1), a 42-34 winner over Brighton on Saturday.
Wahconah struck first on Saturday when Tanner Hastings scored from 3 yards out. Patrick Butler’s PAT made it 7-0 early in the second quarter.
The Central Mass champions responded with a 28-yard TD run from Cole McCubrey. West Boylston went for 2 and took an 8-7 lead into the locker room.
Genaway put Wahconah back on top with his 74-yarder early in the third quarter, and Butler kicked a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead to 16-8.
In the fourth quarter, Wahconah’s Sam Henderson broke up a fourth-down pass to kill a West Boylston scoring chance, and Hastings picked up a big fourth-and-1 with a 3-yard run to extend Wahconah’s final possession.
Wahconah will make its third trip to Foxborough in five years. In 2012, it won the last Western Mass Super Bowl, beating South Hadley, 24-21, at Gillette. Two years ago, Wahconah lost to Holliston in the D4 final, 43-0.
