The accident caused traffic backup at one of the city's busiest intersections. |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Traffic was snarled Tuesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer crashed into a telephone pole at the intersection of Elm, East and Fourth Streets.
Traffic was rerouted around the area — with Police at the intersection and at Fenn and East Streets.
The road was only closed for a short time before Police reopened with reduced lanes and directed traffic at slow speeds.
The accident in front of Berkshire Bike and Board backed up vehicles on all three street at about 1:30 p.m. There were small traffic jams on Fenn Street as well.
A utility pole broken and wires draped over the truck. Police and Fire responded to the scene while Verizon lifted the pole and wires off of the truck.
At 2:30 the truck was bring freed from the tangle. By 3:30 traffic was flowing normally.
No further details were immediately available.
The intersection has been recently eyed to be the site of an electronic billboard, which nearby residents have opposed because of potential traffic hazards. The intersection, along with that section of East Street, is also eyed for a future renovation.
