Nominations Sought for 2022 Neighborlies

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition (nbCC) is accepting nominations for the 2022 Neighborlies celebration, a community recognition award night. 
 
The Neighborlies will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the MCLA Church Street Center, 375 Church Street in North Adams. 
 
The event is free and open to the public. According to a press release, the Coalition urges community members to take the time to recognize those people who have given their time, energy and resources to help make Northern Berkshire a better place to live and work.
 
Residents are encouraged to consider people of all ages who have performed acts of kindness or made a positive difference in their lives, in their neighborhoods or in their community as a whole. Anyone may submit individuals or groups in one or more of the following categories: neighborly acts, young people taking the lead, business/agency support, groups pulling together on a project, and community health and wellness.
 
There are several ways to submit a recognition. People may nominate online through the online form at https://bit.ly/nbcc_2022_neighborlies. Recognition forms may also be picked up and dropped off or mailed to the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition Office at 61 Main Street, Suite 218, North Adams, MA 01247. 
 
Recognitions may also be called in to (413) 663-7588 or e-mailed to gglasier@nbccoalition.org.  Send the name(s), address, phone and e-mail of those being nominated and those making the nomination, with category indication and a brief description of the reason.

Thunderstorms Leave Downed Trees, Wires and Debris Across North County

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A severe thunderstorm hammered parts of North and Central County on Tuesday night, downing trees and limbs and leaving more than 8,000 customers without power. 
 
The Berkshires, Eastern New York and parts of Southern Vermont were under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The storm came through shortly after 6 p.m. with thunder and lightning and torrential rain. 
 
Alerts and calls began streaming into dispatch and fire and police departments began calling in extra help. 
 
When the rain let, the full extent of the damage could be seen — from uprooted century-old trees to scatterings of debris across streets and lawns. 
 
As of 8:30, Brooklyn, Hoosac, Meadow, North Eagle just above Hospital Avenue were closed and the lower section of North Eagle was limited to one-way traffic. Trees were also down on Holbrook, Chestnut and Hall. 
 
Mayor Jennifer Macksey had been getting a close-up look at the damage and speaking with residents. 
 
"I've been trying to hit as many streets as I can so I have couple more streets to hit before I call it a night," the mayor said just before 9 p.m.
