NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Eagle Street Night Market returns for First Friday on Oct. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m.

"Eagle Street hosted a Night Market last year for October First Friday and it was a big success. This year's market will have a greater diversity of vendors, and the street will again be activated with projection art," said Anna Farrington, owner of Installation Space on Eagle and First Fridays organizer. "In addition, the Installation Space will be opening a show of augmented reality artwork, which will include virtual artworks on the street and in neighboring parks."

The Berkshire Cider Project will provide refreshing beverages, galleries and businesses will be open late, and DJ DubTC will be spinning tunes all night.

Local dance group dysFUNKcrew will perform at 7:45 p.m. in the Mohawk Plaza in the Center Street Parking Lot beneath the "Poppy Girls" mural. The group is comprised of MCLA alumni dancers.

Students from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will also be able to enjoy the evenings festivities with a free shuttle service that will loop from Hoosac Hall to downtown every hour.

"The first First Friday event I came upon was in October 2021, for the previous Night Market event Anna produced on Eagle Street," said Andrew Fitch, another First Friday organizer. "The vendors, the lights, the projection art, and the friends I met at the event made this one of the first moments I felt I was at home in North Adams, having only moved here a month prior. I am confident this year's Night Market will be even more engaging and will give both longtime and new residents another reason to feel proud of their city as well."

This is the third First Friday event during which Eagle Street will be closed to car traffic. The intention of the event is to provide a positive, uplifting experience for all city residents, and provide opportunities for local businesses to thrive. Eagle Street also will be closed to car traffic on First Friday, Nov. 4, as well to host the city's first ever post-Halloween pumpkin smashing event.

By Tammy DanielsiBerkshires Staff

A tree limb smashed in the cab on Mark Moulton's truck.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A severe thunderstorm hammered parts of North and Central County on Tuesday night, downing trees and limbs and leaving more than 8,000 customers without power.

The Berkshires, Eastern New York and parts of Southern Vermont were under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The storm came through shortly after 6 p.m. with thunder and lightning and torrential rain.

Alerts and calls began streaming into dispatch and fire and police departments began calling in extra help.

When the rain let, the full extent of the damage could be seen — from uprooted century-old trees to scatterings of debris across streets and lawns.

As of 8:30, Brooklyn, Hoosac, Meadow, North Eagle just above Hospital Avenue were closed and the lower section of North Eagle was limited to one-way traffic. Trees were also down on Holbrook, Chestnut and Hall.

Mayor Jennifer Macksey had been getting a close-up look at the damage and speaking with residents.

"I've been trying to hit as many streets as I can so I have couple more streets to hit before I call it a night," the mayor said just before 9 p.m.
