Big Y Celebrates Supermarket Employee Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — On February 22, Big Y joined supermarkets and food manufacturers nationwide in celebrating Supermarket Employee Day. 
 
FMI—The Food Industry Association, has proclaimed this holiday to recognize employees at every level for the work they do feeding families and enriching lives.
 
According to a press release, with more than 40,000 individual stores that sell food and grocery items in the U.S. alone, supermarkets are the backbones of their communities. Millions of supermarket employees come to work daily to keep shelves stocked and to provide communities with essential services that help them survive and thrive.
 
"We are thrilled to join in this national celebration of Supermarket Employee Day in recognition of the critical role our teams provide to our communities everyday. I'm so proud of the efforts of each of our 12,000 employees for their dedication, resilience and care. We all appreciate their hard work and commitment,” Charles L. D'Amour Big Y president and CEO said.
 
Despite supply chain disruptions or work-force reductions, supermarket employees have demonstrated ongoing resilience. Big Y

"The fact is they always have been frontline heroes during periods of crisis. In the face of natural disasters or global pandemics, these brave and dedicated individuals keep communities strong and moving forward.”

Five People Displaced by Pittsfield Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Five people were displaced and one taken to the hospital from a fire on Alcove Street on Friday. 
 
A report by Deputy Chief Ron Clement said three engines, Truck 2 and Car 2 responded to the report a structure fire at 18 Alcove, and found smoke coming from a second-story window. 
 
Crews from Engine 5 entering the residence found heavy fire on the second floor that was brought under control within 30 minutes. All companies participated in search, ventilation and overhaul efforts. 
 
One man was home at the time and taken to Berkshire Medical Center for possible smoke inhalation. No firefighter injuries were reported. 
 
The four others occupants of the single-family home were not there at the time of the fire. They were not able to return to the house but did have alternative housing, wrote Clement.
 
The fire is being investigated by the Fire Department's Investigation Unit.
