NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Police are investigating a roller rollover on Notch Road that left the driver seriously injured.

Emergency services responded to Notch Road in the late morning Wednesday to find the construction vehicle near the Mount Greylock State Reservation entrance.

"The single occupant was driving, and it appears he went off the road," Police Sgt. Albert Zoito said. "Accident reconstruction is on their way to investigate."

Fire Chief Stephen Meranti said they found the driver trapped and, under the direction of Lt. Matthew LaBonte, extracted the man.

"We found a male trapped in the middle of the roller where the seat part is," he said. "... We used hydraulic extraction tools and stabilization equipment to stabilize the roller."

The driver was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield by Northern Berkshire EMS. A medical helicopter had also been initially dispatched.

"Something like this with a prolonged extrication ... it is good to have that on its way," Meranti said.

Zoito said the driver.s condition was "serious but stable."

He said state police are leading the accident reconstruction investigation, and that state Department of Environmental Protection personnel were called in because hazardous materials were spilled.

Because the accident is still under investigation, Zoito could not say much about the details but did say construction vehicles, such as a roller, normally do not drive on Notch Road.

Notch Road is quite narrow and uneven at parts.
