WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock football team got back to its winning ways with a 27-8 victory over Monument Mountain Friday night at Williams College.

It was pretty easy to see the game plan for Mount Greylock (3-2), as it pounded the ball on the ground early and often. The Mounties started the game off with a quick punt and then never looked back after that.

In the Mounties second drive, they put together a nice drive on the ground including three different runners to set up the eventual 6-yard touchdown pass from Wellspeak to Sean Malloy for the first score of the game. Mount Greylock’s defense continued to keep the momentum going, forcing yet another punt from Monument. In the next series Mount Greylock broke off a couple big runs including a 24-yard strike by Taylor Cummings for a score to give Mount Greylock a 14-0 lead.

“We’ve had a couple games against Lee and Hoosac where we haven’t run the ball super well, it’s good to control the game and that’s what we talked about: Control the game on our terms. And it was a formula for success,” Mount Greylock coach Andrew Agostini said.

That run game he was talking about was lead by Cummings, would racked up 129 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Wellspeak added 69 yards on the ground and a touchdown, While Zeke Locklear added some different looks as well. Mount Greylock would take the 14-0 lead into the break.

Mount Greylock continued to control the game for much of the second half as well forcing some long drives that would end up in eventually turnovers on downs. For as efficient as the offense was, the defense answered the call on the opposite side of the ball. Wellspeak tacked on another touchdown, but this time on the ground and then Jason Betti would catch a 31-yard pass to give Mount Greylock the 27-0 lead.

“We’ve had a bunch of goalline stands this year, it’s good and it speaks to the kids character and heart to finish drives and not let plays before bother you,” Agostini said. “It was a good game and the best we’ve played all season, but Ludlow is a good team, and we need to get better for that.”

Monument got on the board at the end of the game with a TD by Jack O’brien to bring the final to 27-8.

Mount Greylock will face Ludlow on the road next Friday, While Monument will take on Amherst.
