WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Things went from bad to worse in a hurry on Saturday for the Smith Vocational football team.

Host Mount Greylock got an 87-yard touchdown return from Cal Messina on the opening kickoff and never looked back en route to a 48-7 win at John T. Allen Field.

Mount Greylock (2-0) scored on its first six possessions of the game and started pulling its offensive starters early in the second quarter.

Before departing, starting quarterback Michael Wellspeak completed four of five passes for 64 yards and three touchdowns.

Reilly Parker caught one of those TD passes and returned an interception 41 yards for a score that made it 42-0 in the first minute of the second quarter.

“It was obviously a really good start,” Mount Greylock coach Andrew Agostini said. “We played well in all facets, until the starters came out, so that was good to see.

“This is a really hungry group. They prepare well in practice each week. They’re really focused. A start like that is not unusual. We just want to keep it going.

“At some point, we’re going to play teams well into the second half, and we just have to keep it going like that.”

After Messina scored on the Mounties’ first touch, Mount Greylock’s defense forced a third-and-long deep in Smith Voc’s end on the ensuing possession. The third down snap sailed over the quarterback’s head, and Reece Gillette recovered in the end zone; Max Joy hit the second his six extra points to make it 14-0 before two minutes had elapsed.

After Mount Greylock forced a punt on the Vikings’ next possession, it needed just four plays to get into the end zone when Wellspeak connected with Sean McCormack for a 12-yard score.

Wellspeak hit McCormack again on a swing pass to the right side for a 16-yard score on Mount Greylock’s next possession, making it 28-0.

Mount Greylock went 45 yards in two plays for a score on its next possession -- Wellspeak going to Parker for 24 yards and the TD to make it 35-0.

It was 42-0 at half-time, but Jude Rorke pushed it to 48-0 early in the fourth when he recovered a muffed punt and returned it 25 yards.

Smith Voc (0-2) did manage a late TD against Mount Greylock’s second unit, but for the most part the Mount Greylock reserves acquitted themselves well in the extended action.

“It’s a good younger group, too,” Agostini said. “We only have about 30 kids on the team, but they’re a good younger group. Last week, they played well against Mahar. They played well against Smith Voc for real, extended action, so that was good to see. That experience certainly helps.”

Mount Greylock goes to Ware on Friday night.
