NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The visiting Greenfield Green Wave scored 43 unanswered points on their way to a 50-15 victory over the Drury Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon.
Greenfield opened the scoring on the first play of its second drive with a 43-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown by senior captain Max Pirozhkov. The kick was good and the Green Wave took an early 7-0 lead.
The Blue Devils answered though after a 49-yard catch by junior Hayden Bird from senior quarterback Kody Crosier. Nate Hillard took the next snap for a 17-yard touchdown run, and with the kick good the score was tied 7-7.
Greenfield exploded after that for 43 unanswered points including two more touchdown runs by Pirozhkov. His second on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and third a 15-yard rush around the left end. Pirozhkov also had a touchdown through the air when he hit classmate Ben Padua on a 16-yard wheel route. Pirozhkov finished the afternoon with a game-high 125 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He completed four or four pass attempted for 59 yards and one score.
The Green Wave got another touchdown from senior captain Brayten Stack on a 30-yard run right before halftime that pushed the score to 28-7 heading into intermission. Stack ran for 89 yards on the day.
Greenfield chipped in on the scoring on defense when senior defensive end and captain Sam Kennedy recovered a high snap over the Drury punter’s head in the end zone for a touchdown. Freshman backup quarterback Owen Phelps scored the Green Waves’ final touchdown of the game and his first varsity touchdown midway through the fourth quarter when the junior varsity players got a chance to play.
Drury’s second score also was a first varsity touchdown for eighth grader Javoun Woodson on a 2-yard rush. Woodson racked up 51 yards on five carries during the Blue Devils final drive late in the fourth. Woodson then threw a half back pass to freshman Obilio Rodriguez for the two-point conversion.
Drury plays next Saturday night at Mount Greylock at 6 p.m.
