NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Jordan Halgas led all scorers with 16 points to help push the Ware High School girls basketball team past McCann Tech, 38-29, Thursday night.
Halgas scored four points in the fourth quarter during an 8-0 run for Ware to stretch its lead.
Sadie Simons scored nine points, and Michelle Zawalski added seven for the Ware (10-1).
For McCann Tech (3-8), Alanza Quinones had eight points, and Aimee Dowling was right behind her with seven.
After losing by more than 20 last year, McCann put in a good effort to keep this one close until the end.
“They beat us by 25-30 points last year,” McCAnn coach Brian Dowling said. “This is a very much improved team right here. We played good defense.”
Both teams had their share of runs in the first half, but Ware pulled away late in the second to take a 19-12 lead at the break. McCann never gave up and outscored Ware, 9-4, in the third, bringing it to a one-possession game going into the fourth. But it was all Ware as they went on an 8-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter to put this game out of reach.
McCann will look to bounce back against Pope Francis at home on Tuesday night. Ware will take on Pioneer Valley next Friday night.
