NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- An inability to finish doomed the Drury High girls basketball team to a continued slow start on Monday night.

Brattleboro, Vt., handed the Blue Devils a 36-19 loss in Bucky Bullett Gymnasium to drop Drury to 0-2 this season.

Maddy Derosia scored 15 points, and Gabriel Carpenter grabbed nine rebounds for the Colonels, who held their hosts to six points in the second half and one in the fourth quarter.

“I know it’s only the second game, but we just played poorly,” said Drury coach Jay Meehan, who said that his players were frustrated with the evening.

“We didn’t play with any poise or any composure. … That’s not who we are. We’re better than we played tonight, and we’re going to be better.”

For at least one stretch of the game, the Blue Devils showed how good they can be.

After Brattleboro jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening moments of the second quarter, Drury went on an 11-0 run to take its only lead of the game, 13-10.

Olivia Carlson got things started by setting up Brooke DiGennaro for a 3-pointer, and then Carlson grabbed a defensive rebound that led to Molly Moulton’s one-and-one to make it 10-7.

After the teams traded possessions, Jenna Moulton grabbed a steal and got fouled in transition. She hit the second of two foul shots to get Drury within two.

Sarah Lamarre set up Molly Moulton for a triple to give Drury an 11-10 lead with 3 minutes, 15 seconds left in the half, and DiGennaro scored two in the post to push the lead to three points moments later.

But Brattleboro closed the first half with a 5-0 run to regain the lead going into the locker room.

And the Colonels continued that run with the first seven points of the third quarter to go ahead 22-13 when Derosia hit a 3-pointer three minutes into the half.

After a Drury timeout, the Blue Devils went on a 5-0 run to get within four when Destiny Crews drove for two from high on the left wing.

But that was the last field goal of the night for Drury, which managed just a free throw from Molly Moulton (team-high nine) the rest of the way.

Derosia scored 13 of her points in the second half for Brattleboro.

Drury hosts Mount Everett on Friday night.
