CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Alie Mendel scored 28 points in just three quarters of play Friday as the Hoosac Valley girls basketball team stayed unbeaten with a 79-33 win over Monument Mountain.

Lexi Mercier contributed with 14, while Annie Canales had 11.

For Monument Mountain (7-5) Meredith Powell had a team-high 18 points.

This was a one-sided affair between a struggling Monument Mountain team and a scorching hot Hoosac Valley (13-0) squad. It seemed like everything was going the Hurricanes’ way as they were able to jump out to an early lead and not look back. They forced over 30 turnovers in the first half alone and were knocking shots down at a high rate. They went into the break up 42-13.

“Once we had the press going we were able to transition pretty good, we had 12-for-16 from two and over 30 turnovers,” Hoosac Valley coach Ron Wojcik said. “You can’t get much better than that, press wise. I thought we rotated well and we kept the ball up in transition.”

Second half action saw more of the same work on the defensive end for Hoosac. The Canes were able to extend their bench more in the second half than they did in the first, allowing for younger girls to get some quality game time.

“It was great to get some girls in,” Wojcik said. “We worked some in during the first and second quarter, but the second half they were able to get a solid quarter’s work.  But it’s important because you’ll never know who you will need down they stretch and we have kids that fit different roles.”

Monument Mountain will look to snap a five-game skid when it hosts Taconic Monday night in hopes to regain the momentum they had earlier in the season.

Hoosac will go on the road Thursday to face Wahconah, a team that gave them the toughest matchup all season.
