NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Aimee Dowling led the McCann Tech girls basketball team to a 40-27 win over Smith Academy on Friday night.
Aimee scored 13 points, including a few key baskets off of steals. Alanza Quinones and Allie Gibeau each chipped in with eight points.
Both teams struggled to figure each other out as it took two minutes before the first basket was scored. McCann (1-2) brought the pressure early and often forcing multiple turnovers which led to easy baskets. McCann finished the half on a nice run giving them the 20-14 lead.
“We don’t have the height so we are going to have to run,” McCann coach Kathy Budaj said. “We have been scrimmaging with the JV boys to get our tempo up and working on the press, I was pleased with what they did tonight.”
McCann started the second half firing with more of the same pressure defense. The Hornets held Smith to just four points, while scoring 11 of their own in the third quarter. They never looked back from that point on as they continued to push their lead.
Smith Academy made a little run at the end putting some pressure on McCann, but the Hornets were able to withstand it.
McCann will play Mount Greylock on Wednesday in the Hornets Nest.
