Lenox Girls Hold off Monument Mountain for Consolation Game Win
SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Jackie Hathaway hit two of three free throws in the final minute Friday to help the Lenox girls basketball team hold off Monument Mountain for a 38-36 win in the consolation game of the South County Tournament.
Hathaway finished with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for the Millionaires (4-3), who got 15 points from Alice Najimy.
Leonx used a 13-2 run early in the fourth quarter to erase a four-point deficit and take a 35-28 lead when Hathaway hit both ends of a one-and-one with 3 minutes, 45 seconds on the clock.
But then the Millionaires came up empty on six straight possession before Hathaway hit two more at the line to stretch the lead to nine points.
The Spartans got a bucket from Hailey Higgins and a 3-pointer from Addie McLaughlin to quickly cut it to a two-possession game.
Then after a McLaughlin steal, Higgins banked in a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game.
Hathaway drew a foul with 2.5 seconds left and hit the second of her two shots to make it a two-point game, and Monument failed to get a good look at the basket at the buzzer.
Lenox took a 12-4 lead early, but the Spartans responded with a 10-0 run to start the second quarter. From there, neither team led by more than a bucket until Higgins' 3-pointer gave Monument a 26-22 lead on its second possesion of the fourth quarter.
Higgins finished with a team-high 13 points for Monument Mountain, which got 12 rebounds from Destiny Brown.
Lenox hosts Pittsfield on Tuesday; the Millionaires host the Spartans on Jan. 10.
