Pittsfield's Steinman, Drury's Yeaton Recognized
One of our Athletes of the Week set a new standard for her high school program. The other has raised the bar for competitors across the commonwealth.
Pittsfield High School senior Peyton Steinman on Thursday broke the career scoring record for girls basketball players under the dome.
Steinman’s 10th point in an eventual 49-36 win over rival Taconic gave her 1,499 and possession of the program’s scoring record. She went on to score 11 more that night and, on Saturday, she tacked on another 17 in a win over Monument Mountain as Pittsfield won its third straight.
Steinman, who is committed to play Division II college basketball next year at St. Anselm College, averages 21 points and more than four assists and nine rebounds per game for the Generals -- leading her team in all three categories.
It is not very often you can say the best high school athlete in the state is in Berkshire County, but when the sport is bowling and the athlete is Zach Yeaton, the shoe fits.
Last winter, Yeaton earned his third straight MVP as he led Drury High School to its fifth straight state bowling championship. Yeaton has competed on four of those state title teams, going back to his eighth-grade year.
This winter, as a senior, he is averaging a 220 to lead the Blue Devils into first place in the Berkshire County League standings. A week ago in Great Barrington, he rolled a 254 in a win over Mount Greylock that moved Drury into first place; on Friday, he rolled a 268 game and 499 series.
That was Yeaton’s best game of the season and the third best game thrown in the entire league this winter. He already had a 505 series earlier in the season, which is the second best individual day in the 10-team league through eight weeks.
