WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- For the Mount Greylock girls basketball team, Tuesday was a big night and a night for bigs.

Eighth-grader Charlotte Coody scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and senior Delaney Babcock had nine points and 17 rebounds in a 51-31 win over Monument Mountain for the Mounties' second straight victory.

"Charlotte, first of all, she's young, and we're trying to develop her, and she's learning on the fly," Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. "She's a big, solid girl. She's athletic. She knows how to get to the ball.

"And she's got Delaney to help her improve."

That improvement helped the Mounties (4-6) take the three-game season series from Monument Mountain and is planting seeds for future success.

"Usually, they end up on the same team [in practice] because we don't have enough practice sessions and we're trying to put stuff in," Jacobbe said. "But the other day, I was able to match them up, and Delaney and Charlotte are pushing each other in practice.

"They're both good bigs. ... We're not super-sized 6-footers, but we're 5-10 girls who are athletes. And that's very rare. Both Delaney and Charlotte can handle the ball. And Charlotte, having her come out as an eighth-grader this year, I didn't know where she would fit in, and she started every day.

"Her and Delaney push each other and complement each other, and tonight was a good night."

The pair combined for 10 points in a 16-3 Mount Greylock run to open the game. It ended when Coody grabbed an offensive rebound in transition and got to the foul line, where she made both shots to give Mount Greylock a 13-point edge going to the second quarer.

The Spartans (1-6) righted the ship a little at the start of the second with a 7-0 surge that included three points from Abby Dohoney.

But Mount Greylock snapped that run with a Tessa Leveque drive from the left side and maintained a working margin the rest of the half.

The Mounties were up by seven at half-time and delivered the knockout blow at the start of the third, going on a 15-2 run.

Coody scored twice during that stretch, and Emma Stevens (10 points) and Abby Scialabba (10 points) each had a 3-pointer.

"It was kind of a lethargic effort tonight," Monument Mountain coach Randy Koldys said. "For the last few games, we were playing really, really hard. And tonight, I don't think we did as good a job of getting back in transition. I don't think we did a good job in a lot of things as far as giving a solid effort.

"At some point, we've got to get better at it, and we've got all the way to Thursday night to work on it."

Although the starters accounted for 45 points for Mount Greylock, Jacobbe was able to get experience for his young bench for long stretches.

"We've got 11 healthy bodies," Jacobbe said. "We're going to maybe get one more back on Friday. It's hard with that many bodies, but we have athletes. We've got basketball players mixed with athletes.

"I want to make them all basketball players where they're comfortable on the floor, and the only way to get that is the younger girls have to get playing time."

Monument Mountain hosts Lee on Thursday. Mount Greylock hosts Mount Everett on Friday.
