Stefanik 'Unbelievable' in Wahconah Girls' Road Win
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Wahconah girls basketball team took down Drury for the second time this year in a 46-36 win Wednesday night.
Maria Gamberoni lead the Lady Warriors with 13 points.
Wahconah (4-1) started things similar to the last meeting between these two teams, forcing turnovers and getting quick easy baskets. It started the game on an 11-0 run with help from its full court pressure.
Wahconah went to the line 10 times and made half of their free throws to help give them a boost.
After the shaky start from Drury (1-5), it started to settle in late in the first quarter. The Blue Devils were able to go on an 11-5 run and cut the deficit to eight, 16-8, after the first.
Brooke DiGennaro lead the team with 12 points and Alison Felix added 10.
It seemed as though every time Drury strung a few baskets together and started getting momentum, Wahconah would answer right back, keeping a steady 10-point gap throughout most of the game.
“Suzy Stefanik was unbelievable tonight,” Wahconah coach Liz Kay said. “She is the toughest kid we have and it was a physical game. Every time we started to back down it was Suzy that brought us together.
“She has been a phenomenal role player for us for a couple years but for her to be in that leadership role was great, and her other two seniors made sure we didn’t let this one go."
Wahconah went into the half leading, 25-13.
It is always difficult playing an opponent twice in a year having to deal with adjustments from game to game, but it is even more difficult when these games are played a few weeks apart. It was clear Drury had made some adjustments and it made for a much more physical and entertaining game.
“It’s really tough to play a team so close together,” Kay said. “[Drury] made great adjustments and I thought they out worked us and played really really well.”
Drury cut the lead to nine points, but could not get passed that hump. It brought it to within 10 points a few more times but couldn’t capitalize any further. Wahconah’s late free throw shooting helped secure that. As a team, it went 18-for-31 from the line, including 5-for-7 in the fourth quarter.
Wahconah hosts Lee on Friday while Drury hosts Taconic.
