Athlete of the Week: Amber Lesure
It's been a total team effort for the Hoosac Valley girl's basketball team this year, and solid contributions from both starters and the bench have been a major reason why the Hurricanes have started the season 7-2.
One of those bench players, sophomore Amber Lesure, has stepped her game up in the past two weeks and played a big role in the Hoosac's current five-game winning streak. The Hurricanes' shooting guard has been real solid in the past three games, averaging 10.3 points and four rebounds a game off of the bench.
Lesure started off her recent tear with nine points and five rebounds in a blowout win over St. Joe's on Dec. 28th. She nailed two 3-pointers in that game and drained a couple more in Hoosac's next contest, a 71-26 road win over Mount Everett. Lesure finished with a game-high 15 points and four boards against the Eagles.
Proving she's a great spark off the bench, Lesure added seven points, three rebounds and the go-ahead 3-pointer in last week's 47-26 road win over South Division rival Lenox. Overall, Lesure is fourth on the team in scoring (5.8 ppg) and tied for first with 10 threes this year.
"Amber has been playing well for us," Hurricanes head coach Ron Wojcik said. "She is a spark plug off of the bench for our team. She shoots the 3-ball well and gets down the court and to the basket on the fast break. She is also a strong defender for us in our press, and she brings a lot of energy to our team."
