WESTFIELD, Mass. – For the sixth straight season, the Hoosac Valley girls basketball team is a Western Massachusetts Champion.

Ashlyn Lesure scored 25 points Saturday to lead the Hurricanes to a 68-41 win over Monson in the Western Mass Class D title game at Westfield High.

Emma Meczywor scored 18. Genevieve Lagess and Reagan Shea added 13 and 11, respectively, as Hoosac Valley won its 12th game in a row.

Meczywor scored seven points in the first quarter, when the Hurricanes stormed out to an 18-0 lead.

Monson bounced back to get within five points at half-time, but the ‘Canes outscored the Mustangs, 25-11, in the third as Lesure scored 13 points – including 7-for-8 shooting at the free throw line.

Olivia Chrzan scored 22 points to lead Monson.

Hoosac Valley, which won the last two Western Mass titles under the old sectional format, now has four straight titles in the new era, when the regional tourney is a precursor to states.

In the Division 5 State Tournament that gets underway this week, the Hurricanes are seeded second in the commonwealth. They await the winner of a play-in game between No. 34 Ware and No. 31 Palmer.
