PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Wahconah girls basketball team defeated Taconic, 50-46, Tuesday afternoon at Taconic High School.

Taconic took an early lead in the first quarter, but in the second the visitors were able to come out and turn things around in their offensive game.

But with less than 13 seconds to go in the first half, Taconic’s Shay Conyers hit a shot from 3-point range to tie things back up 22-22, where the score stood going into the second half.

Wahconah started the game out in zone, but switched over to man-to-man defense in the second quarter. It was able to create some turnovers and execute on offense, which coach Liz Kay was looking for from her team.

“We were having a really hard time creating offensive opportunities,” Kay said. “The goal was to speed the game up a little bit and hopefully create more opportunity from our defense.”

In the second half, the two teams went toe to toe, with neither able to build a lead. Taconic beat Wahconah on the boards and was able to take the lead at the end of the third quarter, 32-29.

With 1:40 left in the fourth, Taconic tied it at 41, but soon after it got itself into foul trouble, putting Wahconah in the bonus and sending them to the line, where it hit a few shots to put the score at 45-41.

Conyers brought Wahconah’s lead within one point after hitting another 3 with 27:9 on the clock, and Taconic coach Matt Mickle quickly called a timeout, hoping to turn it around and take the win.

“We were looking to play pressure defense and try to create a turnover,” Mickle said. “And if we didn’t get the turnover then to foul.”

Wahconah was able to hold on and seal the win.

Katie Dumas finished with 12 for Wahconah, Lily Pudlo had 11, and Ashley Zink and Maddie Sprague each had 7.

For Taconic, Conyers had 16, Courtnee Clemons had eight, and Maddy Quinto had seven.

Taconic hosts Monument Mountain Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., and Wahconah travels to Pittsfield Thursday night.
