WESTHAMPTON, Mass. – Shayne Moynahan Friday scored 21 points to lead the Hampshire Regional girls basketball team to a 49-43 win over Taconic in the Thunder’s season opener.

Moynihan scored six in the fourth quarter, when Hampshire outscored Taconic, 14-8, to break open a tie game.

Jaelynn Walker scored 20 points to lead Taconic, which got 18 from Evellyn Croce.

“It was a hard-fought game, and we competed all night and there was no quit,” Taconic coach Jason Conuel said. “We battled foul trouble all game long.

“We came out strong in the third quarter, taking the lead at some points.”

Unfortunately for Taconic, that foul trouble caught up with the Thunder. Both Walker and Jalana Smith fouled out of the game midway through the fourth.

“At this point, we continued to battle but struggled with the pressure,” Conuel said.

Taconic (0-1) hosts Amherst on Tuesday.
