Monson Girls Rally Past Mount Everett in Fourth
SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Kaitlyn Santos scored 17 points, and the Monson girls basketball team scored 21 in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat Mount Everett, 56-50 on Friday night.
The Eagles led by three points going into the final eight minutes before the Mustangs were able to rally in a rematch from last year’s Western Massachusetts Division 4 semi-final, won by eventual sectional champion Monson.
On Friday, both teams slogged through a defensive first quarter that saw them combine for nine points but then came alive in the second. The Eagles and Mustangs combined for 40 second-quarter points, and Monson went to the locker room with a 25-24 edge.
Gwendolyn Carpenter (game-high 24 points) scored seven in the third quarter as Mount Everett took a 38-35 lead.
But Kelsey Duggan scored 10 in the fourth to spark Monson to the comeback win.
Carpenter made just four field goals but went 15-for-19 at the foul line.
Madison Ullrich and Marion Devoti scored nine and eight, respectively, for Mount Everett.
The Eagles (2-2) continue a challenging December slate on Tuesday when they host Hoosac Valley.
