With the season winding down, the McCann Tech Hornets are still searching for some late season success to book a trip to the playoffs this year. Coming into Monday night, they had five games left and needed four wins to finish at .500. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they ran into an opponent in mid-season stride.
Greenfield (16-1) came out attacking early and often. They were able to turn McCann over, and that led to easy baskets the other way. At the end of the first quarter, Greenfield jumped out to a 14-2 lead. In the second, the Hornets settled in a little bit on the offensive end, finding ways to score. They finished the half down 28-13.
After the break McCann picked up the intensity, going on a little run of their own. It was able to get key stops on defensive and were able to string those into points on the offensive end. The Hornets produced their highest quarter total with 15 points. Late the third, Greenfield was able to answer back with more good ball movement and easy hoops. In the fourth quarter it was more of a formality for Greenfield as it was able to coast to an easy win.
This was the second matchup between these opponents with Greenfield getting the same result as the first. McCann will now have to win the remainder of its games if it wants to play post-season basketball. As for Greenfield, it hasn’t lost a game since opening night against Hoosac Valley.
Greenfield will take on Pioneer Valley Thursday night, while McCann will have a quick turnaround against Pathfinder on Tuesday.
