Blue Devils Pull Off Road Upset in State Tourney
BOYLSTON, Mass. – Lauren Davis and Jacinta Felix each scored 18 points as the road warriors from Drury High School earned a 62-42 win over Tahanto in the Division 5 State Tournament.
Alyssa Russell added 12 points for the Blue Devils, who took control of the game with an 18-8 third quarter to open up a 44-34 lead.
Davis scored six points in that third quarter.
Felix scored 12 points in the fourth to help her team pull away.
“Away” has been the operative word for Drury this winter.
“This was our 14th bus ride,” Drury coach Ian Downey said. “It was the ninth time we’ve had to travel over an hour. I’m so proud of the girls. After our games vs Agawam, Ludlow and Belchertown on the road, I’ve been stressing all year that we are going to have to learn how to get on a bus and win. I think our schedule has prepared us for today’s two-plus hour bus ride. This is our third win in four games on the road.”
Drury (12-11) scored more than 60 points for the first time this season. And after a rough second quarter that saw the hosts score 18 points, the Blue Devils’ tenacious defense took control in the second half, allowing just 16 points over the final two quarters.
“Defense in the second half was phenomenal,” Downey said. “Lauren and Jacinta stepping up on the offensive end was clutch. Alyssa outside shooting immediately got them out of a zone that Tahanto tried starting in, in the second half.”
No. 23 seed Drury moves on to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of Friday’s game between No. 26 Gardner and No. 7 West Boylston.
