Drury Beat Ludlow in 'Homecoming'
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury girls basketball team completed the season sweep on Ludlow with a commanding, 54-17, win at home on Friday night.
This was Drury’s (4-4) first home game since opening night, ending a run of six straight games on the road. The comfort of home really seemed to help as Drury was off to the races early and often.
Jacinta Felix led all scorers with 14 points, while Megan McGrath added 11 and Lauren Davis eight. It was a well rounded game for the Blue Devils with everyone getting involved. They had seven different scorers in the first quarter alone which saw them take a big early lead 17-2.
“It felt good to be home, we played six straight road games, it just felt good to hear our own fans, the momentum of the fans aren’t against you for most of the time,” Drury coach Ian Downey said. “We spent a lot of time especially after our game against Agawam, who also played a 2-3 zone on working on ball reversals and driving the lane. I thought we did a ton of that as well as going inside out, which leads to good shots.”
The second quarter was much of the same with Drury’s defense continuing to lead to easy transition baskets. ItItey held Ludlow to just two points in the quarter again and were able to put this game to bed before the halftime whistle with a 25-4 lead.
“The easiest way to manufacture points sometimes is your defense, so the fact that we were able to turn some of that defense into offense obviously helps us on the scoreboard, but it gives us confidence to know that we can get a stop and make things easier on the offensive end,” Downey said.
Drury continued to work the 2-3 zone of Ludlow with good, quick passing to open up shots all over the court. The efficient first half also allowed for some of the younger players to get some good minutes and really get involved in the offense. Ninth-grader Megan McGrath was one of those players who ended up knocking down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. After such a long road game streak Drury settled in at home well and will hope to continue that home court love on Monday when it hosts Mount Everett.
