NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Kayla McGrath scored 11 points, and the seventh-seeded Drury girls basketball team got off to a strong start en route to a 70-35 win over St. Mary’s of Westfield in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament on Thursday night.

McGrath, Lauren Davis and Hannah LaCasse each hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 27-6 lead.

“It was a good start to the tournament,” Drury coach Ian Downey said. :I thought we came out and made a statement in the first quarter. We moved the ball well, ran the floor and found the open girl. In the second quarter, I thought we got a little lax. We talked about getting back to Drury basketball at half-time and I thought the girls responded.”

Davis finished with 10 points, and Alyssa Russell scored nine. Jacinta Felix and Danielle Harnick each scored eight.

“I am especially proud of my subs,” Downey said. “They came in the fourth, and we didn’t miss a beat.”

Drury (12-9) advances to next week’s Sweet 16, where it will face the winner of Friday’s game between Maynard and Hull.
