NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Megan McGrath and Lily Mirante scored nine points apiece, and the Drury girls basketball team clamped down defensively in the second half Friday to earn a 42-32 win over Pope Francis.

The Cardinals took a four-point lead after one quarter, but Drury got four points from McGrath to end a low-scoring first half with a 20-19 advantage.

“I thought our defense, particularly in the second half, was incredible,” Drury coach Ian Downey said. “As a defensive minded coach, the second half scares me a bit because the defense isn’t on my side of the floor. Our goal coming out of halftime was to hold them under 40 for the game. I don’t think we gave up a point in the third until under a minute to play. Then to hold them to only three total baskets in the second half was awesome to see.”

A balanced Drury scoring attack saw Jacinta Felix score six points and Norah Wood and Elise Daly add five apiece.

Drury (2-1) goes to Lee on Monday.
