Tobin, Matte Are Season's First Athletes of the Week
In honor of the spring cleanups that are going on throughout the county, this week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week have shown that they can, respectively, rake and mow down the competition.
Pittsfield softball catcher Hayley Tobin has posted a .643 batting average in the first three games of the season.
She has a team-leading nine hits and five RBIs for a team that is outscoring the competition by a margin of 36-7 in three wins.
Two of those wins came against 2017 Western Mass tournament team as the Generals look to get back to the sectional Division 1 final.
On Friday, Tobin went 4-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in as Pittsfield dominated Agawam, the team it beat in last year's semi-finals.
The McCann Tech baseball team is looking to get back to the D4 finals, where it last appeared in 2016.
Then-sophomore Robert Matte III threw six innings to earn the win in the Hornets' semi-final win.
This spring, he is 2-0 with a .50 earned run average after throwing the county's first no-hitter of 2018, an 11-strikeout gem on the road at Commerce on Friday.
