Aitken, MacWhinnie Named Athletes of the Week
Between the New Year's Day holiday at the start of the week and the latest storm of the century at the end of the week, there were not many high school sporting events played, but a couple of performers stood out for their work on the ice and the basketball court.
Hoby MacWhinnie, Mount Greylock senior playing for the Drury cooperative hockey team, and Pittsfield High senior Bella Aitken led their teams to victories to start the new year right.
Wins -- and goals -- have been hard to come by for all three Berkshire County hockey teams this season. MacWhinnie and the Blue Devils took advantage of the first intracounty game of the year, picking up a 9-5 win over Mount Everett in North Adams.
MacWhinnie scored a pair of goals and earned a couple of assists to lead Drury's offense.
Aitken has been a force for the Pittsfield Generals' offense all season, averaging 18 points per game and averaging about two 3-pointers per night.
Aitken scored 15 points and passed out three asssits in Pittsfield's win over Mount Everett on Wednesday night as the Generals won their second straight and improved to 3-2 on the seasons.
