Monument Mountain's Brown, Mount Greylock's Gilooly Earn Weekly Honors
The holiday week saw most of the county's basketball teams playing a shortened schedule, but this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Athletes of the Week made the most of their opportunities.
Monument Mountain junior Dion Brown is averaging nearly 19 points per game in helping the Spartans to a 4-1 start and a three-game winning streak going into Monday's home game against Pittsfield.
On Monday, he scored 12 points to help the Spartans to win their Berkshire County South Division opener on the road at Mount Everett. On Friday, he scored a game-high 22 points to lead Monument Mountain to an 18-point road win over Hampshire Regional.
Monument has a couple of big tests at home coming up against Berkshire North Pittsfield and Taconic before playing three straight divisional opponents.
Mount Greylock's girls picked up a pair of wins in their last two games after a rough start at North Division-leading Taconic.
On Monday, they moved over the .500 mark behind 26 points from freshman Emma Gilooly at Drury.
She scored all seven of her team's points in the fourth quarter of a nine-point win. She also made some big shots early when both sides were having trouble getting an offensive rhythm.
"It's just what my coach has been talking to me about," she said. "I stay after practice, he gives me the ball, I shoot, I shoot, I shoot.
"My teammates believe in me, and they have confidence in what I can do, and that really helps my game."
The Mounties go back at it on Tuesday afternoon against another North Division rival when Pittsfield comes to Williamstown.
