One of this week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week already has helped establish her team as the best in Western Mass.

The other plays for a team poised to make a run at that title in a couple of weeks.

Monument Mountain senior Tyler Wade and the Spartans' baseball team certainly is the team to beat in Berkshire County.

At 12-2 overall, the Spartans are 11-0 against county competition, and Wade is a big part of the reason why.

He is hitting .340 and has stolen nearly 50 bases while going 3-0 with a 2.19 earned run average on the mound.

This week, Wade struck out eight and scattered five hits in leading the Spartans to a 3-2 win over Mount Everett on Thursday.

The day before, he was 3-for-3 with a triple and three steals in a win over Drury.

On Friday, he capped a three-day stretch by getting a hit and scoring a run in Monument's 6-3 win over Lenox.

This Monday, Monument travels to Lee before going to Mount Greylock on Tuesday.

Mount Greylock's baseball team is complimented by the best Division 2 track and field program in the section, and Lilliana Wells is one reason why.

On Saturday, the senior continued an impressive spring campaign by winning the mile run at the Western Mass D2 Championships in a time of 5 minutes, 21.21 seconds. She also helped Mount Greylock win the 2-mile relay and place fourth in the mile relay as the Mounties took the team title with 95 points.

Wells transferred to Mount Greylock this year, but she figures to be a staple on the local running scene for a while. In the fall, she is scheduled to begin her collegiate career at Williams College, where she plans to run cross country and track.

"Toward the end of my junior year, when I was looking at colleges, it was really important to me to be able to run in college," Wells said Friday night. "And I definitely wanted a DIII program where I'd be challenged academically but also athletically.

"I actually didn't know when I moved to Williamstown that was going to end up at Williams. But I fell in love with the area and the coach and had a really positive impression of all the teammates there.

"I'm just really glad to be in the Berkshires for the next few years."

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Bedard Bros. Auto of Cheshire.
