Castillo, Brown Named Athletes of the Week
The first iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week this winter have their teams off to 3-0 starts as they head into the holiday week.
Harolyn Castillo and the Pittsfield girls basketball team won three games in six days in a busy opening week.
She just missed a double-double with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds against East Longmeadow at UMass-Amherst in last Sunday’s Pioneer Valley Tip-Off Classic.
The next day, she scored six in a dominant road win at perennial power Northampton.
Castillo then scored a game-high 18 points in Friday’s home opener, a 30-point win over Holyoke.
The junior forward is coming off a season in which she averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game for a team that went to the finals of the Western Massachusetts Class B tournament.
This year’s Generals are off until Dec. 30, when they hit the road for a game at Chicopee High School.
No one had a bigger start to their season than Monument Mountain senior Manny Brown.
Brown set a school record for points in a game when he hung 50 on Belchertown in an 89-57 win, a game in which he set another school mark with 10 3-pointers.
That effort followed a 30-point game for Brown in a win at former Berkshire County League rival Drury to open the year.
In three games, the guard is averaging just more than 31 points per game a year after averaging 15 ppg as the second option behind Khalil Carlson, who graduated with the school’s all-time scoring record.
Brown and the Spartans will look for win No. 4 on Monday when they visit South Hadley.
