Carlson Leads Spartans in Narrow Win
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. – Khalil Carlson scored 18 points Wednesday to lead the Monument Mountain boys basketball team to a 63-61 win over South Hadley.
The Spartans led early but went into half-time down 29-25 after being outscored, 16-6, in the second quarter.
They then took a 10-point led midway through the fourth quarter but the Tigers hit a couple of 3-pointers in an 8-0 run to get back into it.
“Kenzel Chandler-Ellerbee hit a tough shot with 45 seconds left to put us up 62-58, but [South Hadley’s] Liam Quin hit a 3 with 33 seconds to go,” Monument Mountain coach Randy Koldys said. “After a miss by us, Chase Mathers had a 15-footer partially blocked by Khalil Carlson, and Caden Gidarakos made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 63-61 with 1.4 seconds to go. Khalil guarded the inbounds pass and deflected it, and the buzzer went off.”
Gidarakas scored 13 points, and Kyle Wellenkamp and Chandler-Ellerbee added nine and eight, respectively.
Monument Mountain (6-3) completes a home-and-home against South Hadley on Friday night.
