Athlete of the Week: Nathan Majumder
Who says futbol and football can't mix?
Nathan Majumder, the most dangerous soccer player in Berkshire County this fall, is once again teaming up with some of his school's gridiron heroes on the basketball court.
Majumder scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Mount Greylock's season-opening 55-26 win over McCann Tech on Friday night. On Tuesday, the senior guard added seven points and four rebounds in the Mounties 59-52 road win over Drury.
This fall, he scored 31 goals on the soccer field to lead the Mounties to the Wester Massachusetts Divsion 2 semi-finals. This winter, he is joining with the likes of Tyler Picard, Tyrell Thomas, Ethan Ryan, Brett McCormack, and Hank Barrett from the school's Super Bowl winning football team.
In the fall, this same group of athletes' teams compiled a winning percentage of .833 (27-5-1). On the hardcourt, they are perfect after the first two games of the season.
While Majumder's soccer season ended Nov. 9, the football team played until Dec. 1-- just six days before Friday's basketball opener. It's a familiar problem for players from the three-time defending Super Bowl champion program, but it is not an easy transition to pull off.
"It was difficult," Majumder said. "We're kind of used to it, though, because I play soccer, I'm on my own for the first week. But I think the football guys did a really good job of coming in, learning the plays really quickly and getting into the offense. We've been talking a lot about chemistry and getting everyone together, and I think it's meshed really well in the short time we've had."
"We're finding each other on the floor. We're making really, really great passes. And our offense is working nicely. I don't even think you can see that we didn't have a week with the football guys."
