Kline, Borawski Earn Athlete of the Week Recognition
One of this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week made a big splash during the holiday week. The other's sport is enjoying a hiatus from competition during the school vacation.
Junior Keaghan Kline ended the 2024 calendar year right where she ended the 2023-24 swimming season: as the athlete to beat in Berkshire County.
Kline, a Lenox Memorial student on the Monument Mountain cooperative swim team, raced to clear victories in her sport's shortest and longest disciplines in the Spartans' last meet of December.
Kline captured the 50-yard freestyle and the 500 free in a dual meet against Pittsfield High at the Boys and Girls Club back on Dec. 20.
She also swam the butterfly lap on the team's medley relay quartet and a leg on its victorious 200 free relay.
In winning her individual swims, Kline posted early-season qualifying times for Central/Western Massachusetts in both events.
Swimming in the post-season is old hat for Kline. Last winter, she was the top Berkshire County swimmer at the Division 2 State Championships, earning a medal with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and 11th-place finish in the 50 as a sophomore.
She also swam in the 200 and 400 relays for the Spartans.
Monument Mountain is back in the pool on Friday when Friday when it travels to the Berkshire Family YMCA to take on Wahconah.
Another coop athlete, Hoosac Valley junior Jacob Borawski, had a big week with the Mount Greylock wrestling team.
He led the North County grapplers to a second-place finish at the Berkshire Holiday Tournament in South County, topping the podium at 175 pounds.
Borawski pinned his opponent in the third period of their championship bout to claim one of three titles for Berkshire County wrestlers at the 15-team event.
"This was my first time getting gold in season ever," Borawski said. "The last two seasons, I didn't actually come to this tournament, so I was coming in here with some expectations.
"It was harder than I thought it would be, but I powered through it."
Borawski also placed second in the Mounties' first tournament of the winter, in Athol.
Mount Greylock will compete in a dual at Taconic on Jan. 9 before going back to Valentine Road for the Thunder's annual tourney two days later.
