North County Stars Cobb, Felix Stand Out
This week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week led their teams to wins to keep them in the hunt for the post-season.
The Drury girls basketball team improved to 5-5 after a 2-1 week that ended on Friday night with a win over Mount Greylock.
Junior Jacinta Felix scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in that win after scoring in double figures in Drury's first two games this week.
For the season, Felix is averaging a team-high 13 points per game while garnering 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per night -- both second on the Blue Devils.
Prior to the win over the Mounties, Drury was ranked 16th in the most recent MIAA in-season power rankings in Division 5, putting them on the bubble for a home game in the frist round of next month's state tournament.
Drury, which has won three of its last four games, will be home on Monday night against Belchertown, the first of two games against its Central Division rival.
After a two-game absence from the Mount Greylock boys basketball team, Des Cobb came back this week to help lead the Mounties to a pair of victories that put them back over the .500 mark at 6-5.
On Monday at McCann Tech, he scored seven points -- all in the second quarter -- help blunt a comeback bid from the Hornets in an eventual 57-48 win.
Two nights later, Cobb exploded for 29 points in a home victory over Franklin Tech.
For the season, the Mount Greylock senior is averaging just more than 16 points and 1.4 3-pointer per game -- both best on the team.
The Mounties have seven games left on the schedule (plus two in the Western Mass tournament), starting with Tuesday's home rematch against Turners Falls.
Every game is going to be crucial down the stretch as Mount Greylock battles for its 10th win and a berth in the Division 4 State Tournament. One year after being reclassified from D5, Mount Greylock is currently 53rd in the D4 power rankings; the top 32 teams plus everyone with a .500 record moves on to the state tourney.
