Bowler, Newberry Named Athletes of the Week
Donny Bowler and Emma Newberry have been among the county's biggest offensive threats all season.
And this week, they're accomplishments earned them iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athlete of the Week honors.
Bowler is averaging three goals per game for the Lenox boys lacrosse team, which are 10-1 on the season.
This past week, he upped that average, scoring five times in a win over Pittsfield and four more times -- with four assists -- in a win on the road at Monson.
Although a lot of Lenox's wins this spring have been blowouts, Bowler has shown up in the Millionaires' closer contests. He had a hat trick in a 7-4 win over McCann Tech and had four goals in a 14-12 loss to Hoosac Valley.
Lenox has another test against McCann Tech on Monday when the Hornets pay a visit for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
Mount Greylock's Emma Newberry is a big reason the Mounties have won four straight and eight of their last nine to improve to 11-5 this spring.
This past week, she had three home runs and 11 RBIs against an admittedly overmatched Mahar team. But she continued the momentum into the weekend, homering in a 17-8 win over Mohawk Trail and a 9-8 win over Taconic on Sunday.
"She's close to .700 for a batting average and has [nine] home runs," Mount Greylock coach Mark Pierson said of his shortstop. "So she's been tremendous. And Brodi [Rosier] and some of the girls are really doing well. It's been a team effort."
Newberry leads the Mounties with a .683 average with 40 RBIs -- an average of 2.5 RBIs per game.
Mount Greylock Tuesday faces one of its biggest challenges of the year when Wahconah vists Williamstown. The regular season comes to an end Friday with a visit from a surging Hoosac Valley squad.
