Track and field’s dual meet season got underway on Friday, and this week’s iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week each led their teams to a pair of victories.

And both athletes have been putting up impressive marks all in the unscored meets that led up to Friday’s 2-0 performances.

Wahconah’s Cooper Calvert made a splash in March by flirting with the school record in the high jump at the opening meet at Mount Greylock.

One week later, he tied that record, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches in another appearance in North County.

He fell a little short of 6-2 on Friday, but his 6-0 leap easily took first place in a three-team meet against Pittsfield and Mount Everett.

And his wins in the long jump and triple jump helped Wahconah secure a pair of wins, including a narrow 76-65 victory over PHS.

Calvert owns the county’s best marks in all three jumps this season, resetting the standard in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, .25 inches on Friday.

Wahconah is scheduled to compete twice in the week ahead, on Wednesday at home against Monument Mountain and Taconic and back at Mount Greylock on Saturday for another all-county event.

This winter, Dezerea Powell helped the Pittsfield High girls basketball team play fast and play all the way to the Division 3 State Semi-finals.

She is going even faster these days as one of the top sprinters in the county.

Powell on Friday won the 100 meters and the long jump and ran a leg on Pittsfield’s winning 4-by-100 relay squad as the Generals posted a 76-64 win over host Wahconah.

Her long jump of 15-6 tied her county-best mark set on April 4. Also at the April 4 meet, Powell set the county standard with a time of 13.32 in the 100, an event where she is 3-0 this season.

She will look to extend that record when the Generals compete again next at the county-wide meet on Saturday.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
