Hoosac Valley Boys Pull Away from Wahconah in Second Quarter
ADAMS, Mass. — Hoosac Valley Monday cruised past Wahconah for a 56-38 win.
Izaha Stubbs led the way for the Hurricanes with 17 points, John Krol added 10.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout the first quarter with Hoosac Valley (8-2) getting the slight edge. A couple early fouls put Wahconah’s (6-4) big man Tom O’Connor on the bench, leaving the visitors without his offensive threat and length on defense. Hoosac came out in the second quarter and really changed the game, going on a 10-2 run early. The Hurricanes outscored Wahconah, 13-7, in the quarter giving them a 28-17 lead at the break.
Hoosac Valley’s defense was the major difference, digging in on every possession and leaving Wahconah with difficult shots all night long.
“Our defense picked up, we knew we had to play hard against these guys. They are always a tough matchup for us.” Hoosac Valley coach Mike Larabee said. “Our intensity was very good, seventeen points in the first half -- that’s pretty good.”
In the second half, Hoosac Valley continued where it left off in the first, increasing its leadand putting the game out of reach for Wahconah. Stubbs had eight of his 17 points to help secure the win. Hoosac Valley controlled the tempo of the game, slowing it down and running offensive sets, both using clock and consistently getting good shots for points.
“We have been working on our half court sets,” Larabee said. “Our first five or six games it was pass and shot, pass shot and we are starting to be patient. We are coming, but we have a long way to go.”
This was the fourth straight win for the Hurricanes as they look to improve against rival Drury Thursday night on the road.
For Wahconah, this is their fourth loss in five games, and it will try to regroup against Mount Greylock Thursday.
