Hoosac Girls, Wahconah Boys Win Swim Meet
NORTH ADAMS -- Emma Whitney won two events and swam on two winning relays to lead the Hoosac Valley High School girls swimming team to a 90-80 win over Wahconah on Tuesday afternoon at the Northern Berkshire YMCA.
In the boys meet, Wahconah topped a short-handed Hoosac squad, 88-42, with Mitchell Salvini leading the way with three individual wins and a turn on the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay.
Whitney won the 200 free and 500 free and swam legs on Hoosac's 200 medley relay and 400 free relay quartets, which each took first place.
Hoosac's girls also got individual wins from Julia Whitney (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly), Michaella Vecchiarelli (50 free), and Liz Bernardy (100 breast stroke).
In the tight team race, the Hurricanes picked up needed points from some swimmers who exceeded even coach Eryn Brewer's high expectations.
"We got some seconds I wasn't anticipating," she said. "Shyla Sexton did pretty good. She got fourth in the hundred free, which I wasn't expecting. Maria Mazzu came back in the 500 free. She had her best time and ended up taking third."
On the boys side, the 500 free produced one of many close finishes of the dual match.
Wahconah's Kyle Miller outdueled Keith Pero down the stretch to win the distance event by a scant .03 seconds -- 6 minutes, 24.94 seconds to 6:24:97.
Miller also took first in the 100 breast stroke for Wahconah.
It was the last home swimming meet of the season for Hoosac Valley, which continues its season on Friday at Taconic.
