Wnuk, Larmon Recognized as Athletes of the Week
Now that all the county's baseball, softball and lacrosse teams finally have at least a couple of games under their belts, most also have at least one loss on their ledger.
Most, but not the two that boast this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week.
As often is the case this time of year, the lacrosse teams get on the field a little earlier and a little more often than the bat and ball crowd.
The cooperative team at Lenox Memorial stormed out of the gate with a 6-0 record in its quest to win a third straight Western Massachusetts Championship.
Senior Shaler Larmon is tied for the team lead in assists with 11, and his 16 goals tie him second on the Millionaires in that category.
Lenox played two games over the school vacation week.
They started with a 13-12 win over previously unbeaten Northampton on the turf at Berkshire Community College. Larmon had a goal and two assists in that win.
Three days later, Lenox beat St. Mary's of Westfield on a day when Larmon scored four goals, including the 100th of his high school career.
This week, the Millionaires will be tested at home by county rival Hoosac Valley on Tuesday before going on the road to face Chicopee Comprehensive on Thursday.
The Hoosac Valley girls softball team is 4-0 and has scored in double figures in each of its games.
A big reason why is Rachael Wnuk.
Wnuk leads the team with a .714 batting average, and her eight RBIs is tied for the team lead.
She also has one of Hoosac Valley's three home runs in the early going.
On Saturday, the Hurricanes won a battle of the unbeatens against Lee. Wnuk went 2-for-3 and stole three bases in the win.
The Hurricanes continue a four-game stretch against county competition on Monday when they host Drury at Russell Field. On Tuesday, they make the short trip to North Adams to face McCann Tech.
