Hoosac Valley's Field, Taconic's Cross Earn Athlete of Week Honors
It's early, but this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week have their teams looking like they're ready to lead their teams late into the post-season.
Taconic's Faith Cross and Hoosac Valley's Frank Field each helped their teams to 2-0 starts this week, including wins over rivals from the old Berkshire County League.
Cross averaged more than 18 points per game in wins over city rival Pittsfield and Chicopee Comp.
In the season opener against the Generals, Cross scored a game-high 25 and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Taconic as it opened its defense of the co-State Championship it earned in the 2019-20 season.
Against the Colts, she had 12 points and eight rebounds.
This week, Taconic has a big early Valley League test at undefeated Sprngfield Central on Tuesday before getting a few days off for the holiday.
Hoosac Valley's boys won an early candidate for the county's Game of the Year on Friday when they survived an overtime thriller against Bi-County East foe Monument Mountain.
Field finished with 31 points in the win -- 21 in the second half and overtime as the Hurricanes lost leads of nine points at half-time and seven points late in the fourth before pulling out a one-point OT win.
Through two games, he is averaging 21 points per night.
Hoosac Valley is home for its next six games, starting with Monday's contest Bi-County foe Baystate Academy.
