A full week’s worth of excitement was packed into nine hours on Friday at the South County Tournaments for boys and girls basketball, and our Athletes of the Week helped make sure their respective teams took home the gold.

For Mount Everett, Gwendolyn Carpenter scored 29 points and dished out five assists -- including one on the game-winning shot -- as the Eagles outlasted Lee High in the day’s marquee matchup.

Carpenter also snagged eight rebounds in the victory, including one to deny the Wildcats a last-second second-chance opportunity.

Earlier in the week, in the tourney’s first round, Carpenter scored 25 points in a win over Lenox to set up Friday’s rematch of the 2016 Western Massachusetts Division 4 semi-final, also won by Mount Everett.

After Friday’s slugfest, both the Wildcats (5-1) and Eagles (6-1) will have their hands full not looking ahead to Jan. 13 and Feb. 7. Those are the nights when they are scheduled to meet again in Lee and Sheffield, respectively.

It was a slow start for the Monument Mountain boys basketball team, but it evened its record with a pair of SoCo Tournament wins on Tuesday and Friday.

Kevin Troiano played a big part in the first-round win over Mount Everett with eight points, and he was a major factor on Friday with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Spartans edged host Lenox, 46-40.

Monument coach Mike Saporito hopes Troiano can build on his success in Friday’s win.

“He did play well for us,” Saporito said. “At times, I thought he could have gone even stronger. He probably could have had 20, 25 [points] out there. We’ll take it.”
